Accelerate Recovery with Soft Tissue Mobilization

When it comes to addressing prolonged muscle overuse, soft tissue mobilization is a game-changer. This specialized manual physical therapy technique is designed to target tight areas, accelerate recovery, and propel you back towards your goals.

Understanding Soft Tissue Mobilization

Soft tissue mobilization involves hands-on techniques applied by your licensed physical therapist. These techniques aim to break adhesions and optimize muscle function, promoting a faster and smoother recovery.

Goals of Soft Tissue Mobilization

Adhesions are collagenous scar tissues that form when your body attempts to heal soft tissue trauma through long-term inflammation. These adhesions create trigger points for pain and restrict movement. Soft tissue mobilization focuses on achieving the following goals:

  • Reducing or breaking down adhesions.
  • Increasing range of motion.
  • Strengthening muscles and tendons.
  • Reducing swelling and edema.
  • Alleviating pain.
  • Restoring functionality.

Expert Techniques for Optimal Results

Our skilled physical therapists in Columbia utilize various soft tissue mobilization techniques, including:

  • Sustained pressure: Directly targeting the restricted tissue with applied pressure.
  • Locking the spiral: Alternating clockwise and counterclockwise rotational motions on the affected area.
  • Direct oscillations: Rhythmic pushing on the restricted tissues.
  • Perpendicular mobilization: Applying pressure on the myofascial tissue at right angles.
  • Parallel mobilization: Applying pressure along the muscle seams.
  • Perpendicular strumming: Rhythmic pushing along the muscle border, followed by gentle rubbing of the top of the muscle.
  • Friction massage: Applying pressure across the grain of muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

Soft tissue mobilization requires a deep understanding of anatomy, physiology, and its impact on physical function. Andrea McConkey

This was one of the best experiences! When I went in for a locked knee I was pretty hopeless. Sean was a great listener and helped me find some hope in that very first visit! He created a plan of activities that encouraged me to keep moving. I am so grateful for his kindness and expertise. Highly recommend Sean and the others at Ascent.

I had knee replacement on Jan 31. On Feb 10, I was walking only with a cane. Watching others at rehab, I contribute it to the pre-conditioning Jackson had me do prior to surgery. He worked on building my hip and upper body strengthen. This aided in PT after surgery. Skipped at home PT and went straight baby to Ascent. Now 2 weeks out almost at bending and straightening knee to recommended angles. Their knowledge of anatomy plus PT skills has me walking pretty.
